GABOR (Prešov) - I am a first generation son of Slovak parents that were born in the early 1900’s in what was then Austria Hungary. I am working on our family genealogy and need information from Slovakia. The only information I have on my parents comes from their birth certificates. Let’s start with my father, he was born in Spišská Nová Ves on 29 December, 1902. His birth certificate is hand written and somewhat illegible but his surname is Lukac, but was changed to John Lukacz at Ellis Island, New York. He settled in Buffalo, N.Y. where his two brothers lived. My mother, Maria Smerecak was born in Presov on 7 October 1907. Her birth certificate was typed and legible. Her mother’s name was Maria Gordan and her father’s name was Gabor. They settled in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. I and my brother and sister were baptized in the Greek Catholic Church in Buffalo, N.Y. John Lukacz, e-mail (2012-07-21)

GOLDSTEIN - I have family that was born in Kiralyhelmec Hungary. Here is what I know of my family history so far: My grandfather's father's mother, Yetta Jacobowitz, was born in Kiralyhelmec Hungary. I know that her sister Dinusz Jacobowitz (1866-1944) married Ignac Nathan Jakubovic (1863-1944) and both Dinusz and Ignac were transported to Auschwitz and killed upon arrival. Basically...this is all I know at this point! There were other siblings of Yetta that we do not know what happened to and who I am trying to find out about.  We have their birth year but not year of death which makes me think they might have been killed during the Holocaust (although I could be completely off on this thought...). The names and year of birth are as follows: Tertsa Jacobowitz b. 1867, Hani Jacobowitz b. 1867, Rose Jacobowitz 1871-1942 (unknown cause of death). She married Charles Goldstein (1866-1944, also cause of death unknown), Sadie Jacobowitz b 1873, married Max Pollak (birth and death dates unknown), Aaron Jacobowitz b 1874, married Regina Geller (b. 1880, death date unknown). The parents of Yetta and these other siblings are Regina Samuelovics (1840-1923) and Ignatz Jacobowitz (1835-1895). There was also one other brother but he, along with Yetta and her husband are all known to have emigrated to the United States before the war. These other siblings may or may not have been in Kiralyhelmec during the war but that is my best guess as of now. Jen Selba, e-mail (2010-05-03)
